Chocolate Berrylicious Smoothie Recipe

My all time favorite smoothie recipe that I literally make for breakfast daily is what I call the Chocolate Berrylicious smoothie. It tastes like chocolate mousse ice-cream with berry hints...yum! Berries work wonders in a blended drink as they are low in sugar, but bursting with healing antioxidants. You can always find a frozen berry mix in the grocery store and don't have to worry that they will rot in the fridge. The avocado in this recipe is a must - it has high volume of soluble fiber which helps the smoothie blend wonderfully integrating all the ingredients into a creamy goodness. Lastly, you may think that adding cauliflower is weird, but it adds creaminess and density.

As I mentioned in the Anatomy of a Nutrient Dense Smoothie post, making a smoothie for breakfast or as a meal replacement takes about 5 minutes, and off you can go to conquer the world!

Chocolate Berrylicious Smoothie

Serves 1

Ingredients
  • a handful of spinach or swiss chard

  • 2-3 frozen cauliflower pieces

  • 1 cup of frozen berries

  • 2 scoops of chocolate protein powder

  • 1/4 avocado

  • 1 tsp chia seeds

  • 8 oz of nut milk

Directions
  1. Pour the nut milk in your blender

  2. Add the spinach or swiss chard

  3. Add the 2 scoops of protein powder, avo, chia seeds, berries, cauliflower

  4. Blend increasing the speed slowly until you get a frosty consistency. You can add some ice cubes if you really want to increase the frostiness factor.

Notes:
  • If this is a pre or post workout smoothie, you can substitute the cauliflower for 1/2 frozen banana. Bananas are packed with healthy carbs and potassium so they are ideal for restoring your electrolyte balance after intense physical activity.

  • While spinach is the classic smoothie leafy green of choice due to its mild flavor, swiss chard can also be used and rotated with spinach especially if you are having this smoothie daily like me. Swiss chard is packed with vitamin and mineral goodness.

  • Chia seeds expand when they come in contact with liquid, so apart from having omega 3's, they will keep you full for a long while.

Well, ENJOY!
