I went to a biohacking conference so you don't have to

A room full of people debating whether humans can live to 180.

People wearing rings that track their sleep, patches that track their glucose, and gadgets that promise to reset their nervous system on demand.

That was my week.

I just got back from Dave Asprey's Beyond Biohacking conference with a 2026 trends list 11 items long — mold testing, mitochondrial transplants, peptides you melt under your tongue, the works.

Some of it? Genuinely useful. Some of it? A very expensive way to avoid doing the basics.

So I put my old Wall Street analyst hat on and did what I do best: cut through the hype and find the signal in the noise.

Here's the part that got me. Strip away the gadgets and the big promises, and all 11 trends pointed back to the same four things I already build every protocol around.

Funny how that works.

Your energy is made inside your cells

Your mitochondria are the little engines inside every cell, turning food and oxygen into the energy that runs you.

When they're struggling, you don't need a lab to tell you. You feel it. Tired no matter how much you sleep. Wired but exhausted. Running on fumes by 3pm.

The conference was buzzing about high-tech fixes — there are even "mitochondrial transplants" in human trials now. But the version that actually moves the needle for most people isn't sci-fi. Lower your toxic load. Feed your cells real food. Move your body. Calm your stress.

That unexplained fatigue? It usually starts right here.

The hidden load: mold and toxins

This was the loudest theme in the room. And the one I'd bet matters most to you.

Mold and the toxins it releases are tiny and fat-loving, so they tuck into your brain and your cells and quietly drag down your energy, your focus, your mood. Standard labs miss it completely.

Watch for the pattern:

  • Fatigue that rest won't fix

  • Brain fog that rolls in and out

  • Sinus issues or new food sensitivities out of nowhere

  • Feeling weirdly better the second you leave your house

That last one is the tell. If you perk up at a hotel and crash at home, your house — or even your car — might be the thing nobody's looking at.

This is exactly what I mean when I say: test, don't guess.

Hormones run the show

Over and over, the message was the same: that's your hormones waving a flag.

The stage was full of peptides and prescriptions to "fix" it. My take? Those are downstream patches. Hormones don't go haywire for no reason — they're reacting to your blood sugar, your stress, your gut, your toxic load. Fix the inputs and your hormones stop screaming.

Your nervous system calls the shots

My favorite trend on the whole list: vagus nerve devices.

Your vagus nerve is the direct line between your brain and your gut. It decides whether your body sits in "fight or flight" or "rest and digest." And almost nobody is in rest and digest anymore.

Here's the good news. You do not need a $300 gadget for this. You can flip the switch for free:

  • A few slow exhales before you eat

  • A 10-minute walk after meals

  • Actually chewing your food

When your body feels safe, digestion and hormones fall in line. It's the science behind something I say all the time: healthy is a way of being, not just doing.

What I'd skip (or side-eye)

Not everything earned a gold star.

Nicotine for focus. Ketamine. Off-label prescriptions "for longevity." Real uses in the right clinical hands — but not one of them replaces the four foundations above. "Just take this" is the exact model that kept me sick and stuck for years.

And the trend I'm side-eyeing the hardest? The push to fear "high-oxalate" foods like spinach and almonds. A sliver of truth for some people, sure. But blanket-fearing vegetables is not the move. Your body is not the next person's body — what heals one can wreck another.

What this means for you

You don't need 1000 new things. You need the right few, in the right order, for your body.

See the thread running through all of it? Energy. Toxins. Hormones. Nervous system. All connected, all talking to each other. Get those foundations sorted and most "mystery" symptoms stop being mysteries.

Here's the truth nobody on that stage said out loud: you can't out-gadget a body that's running on empty. Start with the foundation. Everything else gets easier from there.
