Wall Street broke a lot of people. These books kept me whole.

Somewhere in the next few weeks, you will be packing for the airport or the beach, and at some point you will go looking for something to read. A book for the plane. Something for the lounge chair that is not your inbox.

If you are anything like me, you will open your phone, start hunting for the right one, and lose twenty minutes to the scroll.

So let me save you the search.

Sixteen years on Wall Street showed me what I was actually made of. The hours. The stakes. The feeling that one bad call could wipe out a year of good ones. Most days, it was not strategy or skill that kept me upright. It was what I read.

I went through hundreds of books in those years and forgot most of them within a week. But 12 genuinely changed how I think, and how I held it together when the pressure would not let up. If you carry that kind of load too, these are the ones to load into your bag this summer.

Why this matters when the pressure is on

When you run hard for years, what you put into your head matters as much as what you produce. The wrong inputs, the doomscrolling, the panic in the group chat, only wind you tighter. The right book does the opposite:

  • It steadies your thinking when everything feels urgent

  • It gives you language for what you are actually going through

  • It reminds you that the hard season you are in has an end

None of these books handed me a shortcut. What they gave me was a set of fundamentals I still come back to. Here they are.

Mindset and mental toughness

  • Atomic Habits, James Clear — Small habits compound, and the ones I kept shaped my energy as much as my career.

  • Can't Hurt Me, David Goggins — Most limits are self-imposed, but grit without recovery eventually breaks you.

  • Mindset, Carol Dweck — Believing you can improve is what kept me growing through the hardest years.

Productivity and execution

  • Getting Things Done, David Allen — Offloading the mental load lowered my stress more than any productivity trick.

  • The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey — Live by design, not by default, even when your desk is running your life.

  • The Obstacle Is the Way, Ryan Holiday — The Stoics carried me through market crashes, and later through my own burnout.

Money and priorities

  • Your Money or Your Life, Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez — It changed how I valued my time, and eventually my health.

  • The Psychology of Money, Morgan Housel — Doing well with money is about behavior. So is doing well with your health.

  • The Magic of Thinking Big, David J. Schwartz — Thinking bigger gave me the nerve to leave finance and start over.

Meaning and perspective

  • Becoming Supernatural, Dr. Joe Dispenza — How intention and attention can shift the state you live in.

  • The Four Agreements, Don Miguel Ruiz — It quieted a lot of the noise I used to carry home from the office.

  • The Secret, Rhonda Byrne — Where your focus goes, your energy tends to follow.

The four fundamentals underneath all of them

Strip away the titles and every one of these books points back to the same short list:

  • Take care of your body.

  • Protect your mind.

  • Spend your time and money on what actually matters.

  • Play the long game.

The longer I did this, the more obvious it became: fundamentals beat hacks, every time. And the fundamental I ignored longest, my own body, is the one I now help other high performers protect. You can read every book on this list and still get stopped cold by a gut that won't cooperate or hormones that run the show.

Bottom line

Pick one book this summer and give it a real half hour, not the scraps of your attention before bed. Then pick one fundamental you have been putting off, and start there too. If the one you keep ignoring is your health, that is the work I do with clients: finding the root cause instead of guessing, so your body stops being the thing that caps everything else.

What is one book that genuinely changed how you think?
